Merlin and Cerridwen at the original GrowingSpace Farm. Castell Haidd, Pembs.
We came to the magnificent landscape of rural Pembrokeshire to seek a peaceful existence away from the urban madness of city life; to grow an organic garden, an herbal pharmacopaeia, and to provide an environment for our friends back in the cities to spend time with us, and explore the ancient sites, clean beaches, and other natural wonders of West Wales with us.
As in "Field of Dreams", friends told friends about us, and people began coming to stay and to learn our skills in archaeology, horticulture, metaphysical sciences, gourmet vegetarian cookery, alternative technology, the Welsh language, and related fields of study.
GrowingSpace became a guesthouse, restaurant, and learning centre, where other friends could come and teach their own specialist Workshops too. As we became financially self-sustaining, we began to offer free holidays to young people, especially those with budding interests in archaeology, to stay at GrowingSpace and study the abundant Ancient Sites in the area. Many of those students have gone on to successful careers in the sciences.
Within one year, without the benefit of a website or commercial advertising, we had achieved a profit-sharing collective business that supported us all.
Some of us lived there fulltime. Other members of the collective owned timeshares to combine urban and country lifestyles.
As our personal careers and relationships led us in different geographical directions, GrowingSpace I closed in 1987.
The need for a GrowingSpace II is even more apparent in the new millenium. A new collective is now forming to secure a rented or purchased property for the core members to have as a home and base for our business interests, including Pagan Tours of Wales.
We receive three or more enquiries about tours through this website nearly every day, from people living in all parts of the world. All we need is another house to use as a base of gathering. With the multitude of B and B, pub, hotel and related accomodation facilities in the area, overflow clients can be housed, whilst they may still make use of GrowingSpace House during the day and evening, for classes, meals, and to meet and talk with the staff and each other.
